Meet your therapist
Jae Yoo , counsellor, clinical supervisor, and just another person
I am a Canadian Certified Counsellor and Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCC-CCS #3112) with over fifteen years of experience in public and private practice. My work is grounded in CBT, DBT and EMDR, and shaped by attachment-based, somatic and expressive approaches, plus a deep fascination with Jungian depth psychology.
I have extensive experience in working with childhood trauma issues and with the cross-generational pressures that come with living between cultures. I moved from Korea at sixteen and built a career in a profession made entirely of words, in my second language in a completely different culture. That experience is part of what I bring into the room.
Therapy with me is conversational, direct and occasionally funny. If breaking the blank-slate rule helps someone heal in five sessions instead of fifty, I will gladly take that trade.
The approach
What makes this counselling different
Active & Focused
I am not a conventional therapist who simply nods and listens. I take an active, collaborative role in our sessions. We work together to gently interrupt unhelpful cognitive loops and zero in on the exact core beliefs such as “I am inadequate” or “I am responsible for everyone else” that are driving your distress.
Demystifying Psychology
I actively integrate psychoeducation into our sessions so you understand exactly why your brain and body are reacting the way they are. Using relatable imagery and vivid metaphors, I translate complex psychological frameworks into practical, everyday tools.
Authentic Connection
Therapy is a collaborative work. I bring my authentic self to the room with a conversational tone that neutralizes the clinical power dynamic. I use humor and my own authentic self as an agent of change. By sharing, modeling, and showing up as a real fellow person, we break down clinical walls to do the heavy lifting together.
Somatic Resourcing First
Standard cognitive interventions often fall flat when your nervous system is in fight or flight. Before we process heavy emotions, I prioritize somatic regulation. Using body-based resourcing, I equip you with concrete physiological tools so you can safely process trauma without feeling overwhelmed or emotionally hijacked.
Work with Depth and Symbols
Informed in Jungian psychology, I actively use symbols, dreams and imagery so my clients can explore their Shadow the hidden, often rejected parts of their identity. By exploring these underlying archetypes and projections, we can uncover hidden resentments and unspoken boundaries, leading to profound personal integration rather than just superficial symptom management.
Cross-Cultural Understanding
Living between two or three cultures creates unique cross-generational and systemic challenges that I understand through lived experience. By bridging clinical expertise with cultural wisdom, I offer directive guidance to help clients navigate these complex pressures. I strive to empower clients to achieve tangible change and authentic balance while honouring your multi-layered identity.
